Discover Porticcio - Ajaccio

This is a rugged coastal region which, with its many kilometres of fine sand and turquoise waters, hills of maquis shrubland embracing it like an emerald jewel case, and a fascinating cultural, environmental, historical and artisanal heritage, offers a multitude of riches and delights for nature lovers, seekers after tranquil relaxation, and water sports enthusiasts alike.

Porticcio and the south shore benefit from a privileged location on one of the most beautiful gulfs in the world, with Napoleon’s birthplace and the Sanguinaires Islands as a backdrop. With its plentiful sunshine, inviting beaches and the sea stretching as far as the eye can see, the south shore has everything conducive to escape and relaxation, whether you’re in the mood for a pleasant break with friends on a beautiful sunny terrace, tucking into a sea urchin on the beach, enjoying an evening concert or attending an event.

Our regional heritage

Porticcio and the south shore are particularly noted for their beach culture, but there’s plenty of opportunity to discover other attractions in the region, such as:

  • Picturesque villages with their colourful charms that reveal themselves to you as you explore the area (the communities collectively known as the Piève de l’Ornano are comprised of delightful places such as Grosseto-Prugna, Albitreccia, Sainte Marie-Sicché and Pina-Canale).
  • The natural wonders of the Prunelli Valley, the Restonica Gorges and, of course, the unmissable Cascade des Anglais waterfall and the Pénitencier de Coti-Chiavari, a former prison and fascinating historic landmark.
  • The heritage of imperial history that pervades Ajaccio, birthplace of the Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte. Visit the house where he was born, as well as the Fesch Palace and its museum, which houses one of the world’s most important collections of Italian paintings.
  • The famous Sanguinaires Islands, an archipelago of four islets of red-hued porphyry that gives them their name. On this exceptional protected natural site, you can find nearly 150 different plant species, but the archipelago also serves as a designated reserve for several species of birds such as the cormorant, peregrine falcon, Sardinian warbler and various gulls.
